Autism/ABA Summer Groups

OKP Autism Services 2017 Summer Camps provide activities that are fun and interesting and each camp is designed to meet the unique needs of children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The one week themed camps are being offered to different age groups throughout the summer. The small group size in each camp allows each child to participate at his/her own pace within the groups.

*Due to a generous donation from the Deacon Family these camps are being offered free of charge to families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Camp Information

Lunch: Participants will be required to bring a lunch each day, healthy snacks and drinks will be provided. Excluding the cooking camps (they will make lunch daily).

JULY 2017

Theme: Blast off to summer
July 4 – 7     Location:  OKP, North Bay
(6-12 years old) 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. ; (13-21 years old), 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
NADY children and youth will learn various gross motor and sports skills, along with arts, culture and social programming.  Each day will consist of skill and themes that aligns with the Fundamental sports program. Activities will include both indoor and outdoor, as well as on-site and off-site locations.

Theme: Happy Birthday Canada
July 10 – 14    Location:  OKP, North Bay
(6-12 years old) 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. ; (13-21 years old), 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
NADY children and youth will learn various gross motor and sports skills, along with arts, culture and social programming.  Each day will consist of skill and themes that aligns with the Fundamental sports program. Activities will include both indoor and outdoor, as well as on-site and off-site locations.

Autism/ABA Summer Groups
Playing it Safe (7-11 years old) – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Children attending the Playing it Safe program will learn the basic safety components developed and adapted for children with developmental needs and on the autism spectrum.   The program covers information regarding stranger danger, internet safety, basic first aid information, fire safety, water safety, community safety, and public transportation safety. The in-class learning component includes the presentation of interactive lessons using peer interaction, technology, modelling, role play, and traditional teaching methods.  The community outings component includes outings to local OPP station, fire station, visit from a paramedic and ambulance tour, visit to the YMCA, visit to the water front, and use of public transportation.

Highlights: A variety of visits/outings to meet members of our community who implement safety (police, firefighters, paramedics, water safety etc.)

Autism/ ABA Summer Camps (Muskoka/ Parry Sound)
Cooking Camp (9-15years old) – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Youth will learn adventures in cooking. The group teaches youth to cook, encourages them to try new foods and recipes, promotes healthy eating habits, is a great “hands on” learning experience, and makes teens aware of what goes on in the kitchen.  A wide range of valuable daily living skills are addressed through participation in this group; knowledge of Canada’s food guide, menu planning food preparation, kitchen safety, cooking, recipe reading, ingredients measurements, kitchen appliance operation and cleaning skills.  Social and communication skills are stimulated while the group work together as a team to prepare and enjoy delicious foods.  Individuals share with each other about their favorite experiences and foods, and take hope recipes to try with their families.

Highlights: making and eating a meal and dessert in a social fun environment.

Theme: Around the World
July 17-21     Location:  OKP, North Bay

While working together, children will have the opportunity to develop social skills and build on their strengths with peers. What a great chance to have fun with robots and work together in a social setting.

July 24 – July 28   Location:  OKP, North Bay

Adventures in Nature (7-10 years old) – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
A nature based approach to relaxation will be used to promote emotional well-being through group and peer learning contexts. Participants will experience nature through the exploration of local walking trails and outdoor recreational activities. Some of these activities include hiking, fishing, and tent building. Additional team-building activities include nature based scavenger hunts and relay races. Relaxation exercises incorporated into the group include deep breathing, progressive muscle tension, and mindfulness. The above activities will aid in building emotional resilience and problem-solving abilities, which will in turn foster greater independence.

Theme: Moving and Grooving
August 8-11    Location:  OKP, North Bay

August 14-18    Location:  OKP, North Bay

Explore & Express: Visual Arts and Music (13-17 years old) – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Children and youth will have the opportunity to take part in visual art and musical activities. Each morning we will explore different forms of visual art, including canvas, collaging, and painting. In the afternoon, kids will have a chance to try out different instruments and collaborate on a variety of sounds. This camp will be an opportunity for everyone to develop social skills while practicing self-expression through fun artistic activities. Tools for self-expression, self-regulation, and self-esteem will be discussed and practiced throughout the week. Come on out to Explore & Express, and have a great time discovering yourself!

Theme: Back to School
August 21 – 25    Location:  OKP, North Bay

Get Ready, Get Set, Go!: School Readiness (3.5 – 6 years old) – Session 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Session 2 from 1:00 to 3:30
Getting ready to go to school? Having some difficulties with transitions and expectations? Let’s work together on these skills and preparation for school! Children will take part in classroom activities such as circle time, structures activities, and peer engagement. Some of the skills we may focus on are taking turns with peers, attending to the teacher, and following instructions and routines. While working on these areas, children will have the opportunity to take part in fun games, exciting activities, and making new friends. This group will provide support related to school expectations and peer engagement, so Get Ready, Get Set, Go!
