What is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-Language Pathology is the area of helping individuals with speech, language and communication delays and disorders. Speech- Language Pathologists are the professionals trained in the area of assessment and treatment to increase a child’s functional ability towards successful communication. Communicative Disorders Assistants work with Speech-Language Pathologists to carry out all aspects of the therapy programs. Speech and Language Therapy may involve a home program, parent/caregiver training, direct therapy individually or in a group, monitoring/consultation with the family and or other agencies working with the child, such as school or daycare.

Types of Therapy Services:

  • Direct therapy, either individual or groups, offered by a therapist or Communicative Disorders Assistant .
  • Monitoring in which the therapist trains someone else involved with the child on a more regular basis to carry out the occupational therapy plan.  The therapist is in regular contact with the person who carries out the program.
  • Consultation with parents, caregivers, day care staff, school staff, etc.
  • Home programs for use by parents, caregivers, day care staff school staff.
  • Collaboration with children and their families, caregivers, daycare and school staff and other agencies to provide individualized treatment plans suited to the child and family’s strengths and needs.
